Anticorrosive behavior of steel coated with epoxy. Organic coatings that use epoxy resins are widely used for protecting steel and metal against weathering and corrosion. Researchers at National Technical University (Athens. Greece) examined the steel anticorrosive behavior of different epoxy coatings formulated with zinc pigments in an attempt to find the epoxy coating with the best corrosion inhibition (Pigment & Resin Technology, Vo. 32, 2003). The experimental units were flat rectangular panels cut from steel sheets. Each panel was coated with one of four different coating systems. S1, S2, S3, and S4. Three panels were prepared for each coating system. (These panels are labeled S1-A, S1-B, S1-C. S2-A, S2-B.....S4-C.) The characteristics of the four coating systems are listed at the bottom of the page. Each coated panel was immersed in deionized and deaerated water and then tested for corrosion. Because exposure time is likely to have a strong influence on anticorrosive behavior the researchers attempted to remove this extraneous source of variation through the experimental design. Exposure times were fixed at 24 hours, 60 days, and 120 days. For each of the coating systems, one panel was exposed to water for 24 hours, one exposed to water for 60 days, and one exposed to water for 120 days in random order. The design is illustrated in :he accompanying table.
Exposure Time | Coating System/Panel Exposed |
24 hours | S1-A, S2-C, S3-C, S4-B |
60 days | S1-C, S2-A, S3-B, S4-A |
120 days | S1-B, S2-B, S3-A, S4-C |
Following exposure, the corrosion rate (nanoamperes per square centimeter) was determined for each panel. The lower the corrosion rate, the greater the anticorrosion performance of the coating system. The data are shown in the next table. Are there differences among the epoxy treatment means? If so, which of the epoxy coating systems yields the lowest corrosion rate?

- You are asked to compare the cleansing action of three detergents based on the following whiteness readings made on x swatches of white cloth, which were first soiled with ink and then washed in an agitator-type machine with the respective detergents. Table 1 displays the readings for three different detergents. Determine df1, df2. Composites are used in engineering structures, and their degradation when subjected to whether conditions is an important issue. In an experiment to investigate the effect of the moisture on a certain kind of composite, the weight gains of a collection of n=28 samples of composite subjected to water diffusion were obtained. The sample mean is x=0.42% with a sample std. of S=0.04% Can we 95% confident from the results of this experiment that the average weight gain for composites of this kind is smaller than 0.43%?arrow_forwardAs per image An experiment analyzes imperfection rates for two processes used to fabricate silicon wafers for computer chips......arrow_forward
- The DENR has a new procedure to detect algal bloom in water being tested. This new procedure is important because, it could be used to detect three different contaminants-organic pollutants, volatile solvents, and chlorinated compounds. The department claims that it can detect high levels of organic pollutants with 99.95% accuracy, volatile solvents with 89.70% accuracy, and chlorinated compounds with 99.70% accuracy. If an algal bloom is not present, the test does not signal. Samples are prepared for the calibration of the test and 60% of them are contaminated with organic pollutants, 27% with volatile solvents, and 13% with traces of chlorinated compounds. A test sample is selected randomly. Denote as follows: S = signal, O = organic pollutants, V = volatile solvents, C = chlorinated compounds. If the test signals, what is the probability that chlorinated compounds are present? (Show complete solution in your answer sheet) O a. P(CIS) = 0.1386 Ob.P(C|S) = 0.1184 OC. The article "Experimental Study on the Bond Behavior of Reinforcing Bars Embedded in Concrete Subjected to Lateral Pressure"t reported the results of one experiment in which varying levels of lateral pressure were applied to 21 concrete cube specimens, each with an embedded 16 mm plain steel round bar, and the corresponding bond capacity was determined. Due to differing concrete cube strengths (f, in MPa), the applied lateral pressure was equivalent to a fixed proportion of the specimen's f (0, 0.1f.., 0.6f). A concession stand manager at a baseball game must decide whether to have the souvenir vendors sell sun visors or umbrellas. There is a 30% chance of rain, a 15% chance of clouds, and a 55% chance of sunshine, according to weather predictions for the game. Because supplies can only be ordered 3 days before each game, the stand manager is unable to waituntil the day before the game to acquire the materials to be sold. One study presented 200 young American men with 100 images of men with various levels of muscle. Researchers measure level of muscle in kilograms of fat‑free body mass per square meter of body surface area (kg/m2). Typical young men have about 20 kg/m2.. Each subject chose two images, one that represented his own level of body muscle and one that he thought represented "what women prefer." The mean gap between self‑image and "what women prefer" was 2.35 kg/m2.. Suppose that the "muscle gap" in the population of all young men has a Normal distribution with standard deviation 2.5 kg/m2.. If young men thought that their own level of muscle was about what women prefer, the mean "muscle gap" in the study would be 0. We suspect (before seeing the data) that (most) young men tend to think women prefer more muscle than they themselves have. What is the value of the test…arrow_forward
