Among the literature on quitting smoking are data detailing the relative successfulness of people of different ages in quitting smoking. A study of 400 adults who
began various smoking-cessation programs produced the data in the table below. In the table, each participant is classified according to two variables: length of
their smoking cessation period ("Less than two weeks", "Between two weeks and one year", or "At least one year") and age ("21-34", or "35 and over"). In the
table, "less than two weeks" means that the individual returned to smoking within two weeks of beginning the program; "between two weeks and one year"
means that the individual lasted the first two weeks without smoking but retuned to smoking within a year; and "at least one year" means that the individual
has not smoked for at least a year since beginning the program.
The table is a contingency table whose cells contain the respective observed frequencies of classifications of the 400 smokers. In addition, three…

An important issue is whether there are racial differences in hypertension among children. We define hypertension as being above the 95th percentile for either systolic blood pressure (SBP) or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) among children of the same age, height, and sex. Since some of the children were observed at multiple visits, a GEE model was run of hypertension on ethnic group. There were three ethnic groups considered: Caucasian, African American, and Hispanic. The results among boys are given in Table 13.54.

Since some of the children were observed at multiple visits, a GEE model was run of hypertension on ethnic group. There were three ethnic groups considered: Caucasian, African American, and Hispanic. One issue is that BMI, which may vary among ethnic groups, is positively related to hypertension. Hence, a logistic regression model was run, as shown in Table 13.55. 13.89 What is the estimated OR for hypertension comparing Hispanic boys vs. Caucasian boys based on the results in Table 13.55? What might be the effect of early exposure to antibiotics on children's development? One study followed 11,532 full-term babies all born in the county of Avon, United Kingdom, during 1991 and 1992. Exposures to antibiotics during infancy were recorded, along with measures of body mass at regular intervals over several years. The researchers found that antibiotic exposure during the first six months of life was associated with increased body mass later in childhood.arrow_forwardResearchers studied 208 infants whose brains were temporarily deprived of oxygen due to complications at birth. When researchers detected oxygen deprivation, they randomly assigned babies to either usual care or to a whole-body cooling group. The goal was to see whether reducing body temperature for three days after birth increased the rate of survival without brain damage. What is the explanatory variable? A. How could this study be changed to make it a double-blind study?arrow_forwardWelsh, Davis, Burke, and Williams (2002) conducted a study to evaluate the effectiveness of a carbohydrate-electrolyte drink on sports performance and endurance. Experienced athletes were given either a carbohydrate-electrolyte drink or a placebo while they were tested on a series of high-intensity exercises. One measure was how much time it took for the athletes to run to fatigue. Data similar to the results obtained in the study are shown in the following table. Does the herb Echinacea help the common cold? A study investigated the impact of echinacea vs. a standard cold medication on cold symptoms. Each subject in the study chose to take either the echinacea or a standard cold medication in capsule fom After taking the capsule for one week, the subjects then reported to the researchers the status of their cold symptoms. The researchers subsequently reported that there was no statistically significant difference in the duration of the cold between these groups. Does the shape or color of a pain pill influence its effectiveness? Although logically it shouldn’t, whether we believe a drug will work does have a powerful effect on our perceptions (e.g., placebo effect). In this experiment, 4 groups of adult patients were given the same amount of Advil after dental surgery for pain relief, but the color and shape of the pill varied. Researchers hypothesized that an unusual shape or color would lead people to believe the pills were new and special and thus would expect them to be more effective than common round, white pills. Researchers also wanted to know if there is an interaction between shape and color Data Labels ShapePill {1=Round; 2=Diamond} ColorPill {1=White; 2=BlueGreen} Gender {0=Woman; 1=Man; 2=Nonbinary person) Descriptions of the Variables and Descriptive Statistics: Referring to the JASP output, and using sentences, present the descriptive statistics of each group: for example:…arrow_forward
