Banning controversial sports team sponsors. Successful marketing of professional sports franchises involves finding sponsors that appeal to the team’s fans. The Journal of Marketing Research (October 2015) published a study that investigated the impact of banning a controversial sponsor (e.g., one that manufactures an alcoholic beverage) on a soccer team’s success. Data were collected for 43 English soccer clubs over a 30-year period, where each club-year represents a market. The clubs were divided into four types: (1 ) clubs that had banned alcohol sponsors but now have other sponsors, (2) clubs that had banned alcohol sponsors and now have no other sponsors, (3) clubs that did not have banned alcohol sponsors but now have other sponsors, and (4) clubs that did not have banned alcohol sponsors and now have no other sponsors. To assess the impact of an alcohol ban in a market, the researchers computed the matching value loss (MVL), a numerical measure used to estimate the value lost between a club and a sponsor if a ban is implemented. The table below gives summary statistics for the matching value loss for the four club types in 177 markets. The mean matching value losses of the four types were compared using an analysis of variance. Although the ANOVA table was not provided in the article, sufficient information is provided to reconstruct it.
a. Compute SST for the ANOVA, using the formula (see p. 508)
where
b. Recall that SSE for the ANOVA can be written as
where
c. Use the results from parts a and b to construct the ANOVA table.
d. Is there sufficient evidence (at α = .01) of differences among the
e. Comment on the validity of the ANOVA assumptions. How might this affect the results of the study?

- Social Media Use. A marketing firm would like to test-market the name of a new energy drink targeted at 18- to 29-year-olds via social media. A study by the Pew Research Center found that 35% of U.S. adults (18 and older) do not use social media (Pew Research Center website, October 2015). The percentage of U.S. young adults age 30 and older is 78%. Suppose that the percentage of the U.S. adult population that is either age 18–29 or uses social media is 67.2%.a. What is the probability that a randomly selected U.S. adult uses social media?b. What is the probability that a randomly selected U.S. adult is aged 18–29?c. What is the probability that a randomly selected U.S. adult is 18–29 and a user of social media?arrow_forwardA social media app is conducting a study on the amount of time users spend on the app. They collect the following variables. Age Years: How old they are in years? Income: Monthly Income Location: What country do they live in? Device: Do they use an iPhone, Samsung, other? Service: Who provides their mobile phone service? For example: T-Mobile, At&t, Verizon, ect Hours: How many hours do they spend on the app per week. A) Which variable could the research construct a one proportion z-interval for? B) The social media app just launched a new algorithm that suggest content in an effort to increase the amount of time the user spends on the app. The researchers want to use the survey results to see if there is statistically significant evidence that on average users spend more than 10 hours per week on the social media app. The researchers found in their sample of 44 users, the mean hours spent on the app is 10.5 hours with a standard deviation of 5.675 hours.
