Concept Introduction:

A covalent bond is defined as a bond that results from the mutual sharing of electrons between atoms. The Lewis electron-dot symbol can be used to describe the covalent bonds in molecules.

Two types of pairs of electrons are as follows:

1. Bonding pairs of electrons are shared between two atoms.

2. Lone or nonbonding, pairs of electrons are on one atom and are not shared.

Lewis structure is a representation used to denote the valence shell electrons present in a molecule. It is used to represent the arrangement of the electrons around individual atoms in a molecule. Electrons are shown as dots and for bonding electrons as a line between the two atoms.
