Chapter 9, Problem 9.25P

Formaldehyde is produced commercially by the catalytic oxidation of methanol. In a side reaction, methanol is oxidized to CO2.

   C H 3 O H + O 2 C H 2 O + H 2 O C H 3 O H + O 2 C O 2 + 2 H 2 O

A mixture containing 55.6 mole% methanol and the balance oxygen enters a reactor at 350°C and 1 atm at a rate of 4.60 × 104L/s. The reaction products emerge at the same temperature and pressure at a rate of 6.26 × 104L/s. An analysis of the products yields a molar composition of 36.7% CH2O,4.1% CO2, 14.3% O2. and 44.9% H2O. The required reactor cooling rate is calculated to be 1.05 × 105kW.

  1. Is the calculated cooling rate correct for the given stream data?
  2. The stream data cannot be correct. Prove it.

2. The predominant forms of heavy metals (Zn, Pb, Fe, Cu, Ni, etc.) in aerobic sediments are the carbonates and the oxide or hydroxide forms. An important consideration in modeling the sediment is the stable chemical form of the metal in question. Consider the reaction: AG = 25 kJ/mol Pb(OH)₂ (s) + CO₂(aq) → PbCO₂ (s) + H₂O a. At what partial pressure of CO₂(g) will Pb(OH)2(s) and PbCO3(s) be at equilibrium? b. If the system is at equilibrium with the atmosphere, Pc02-10-3.38 atm, calculate 4G for the reaction. What is the stable form of lead in the sediments?
A student dissolves 10.3g of ammonium nitrate NH4NO3 in 300.g of water in a well-insulated open cup. He then observes the temperature of the water fall from 22.0°C to 19.3°C over the course of 3.1 minutes. Use this data, and any information you need from the ALEKS Data resource, to answer the questions below about this reaction: NH4NO3s -> NH+4aq + NO−3aq You can make any reasonable assumptions about the physical properties of the solution. Be sure answers you calculate using measured data are rounded to the correct number of significant digits. Is this reaction exothermic, endothermic, or neither? If you said the reaction was exothermic or endothermic, calculate the amount of heat that was released or absorbed by the reaction in this case. Calculate the reaction enthalpy ΔHrxn per mole of NH4NO3.
consider the following balancing process at 700c 2H2 (g) + 2s2 (g) 《》 2H2 (g) An analysis shows that there are 2.5 moles of H2, 135 × 10 ^ -5 moles of S2 and 8.70 moles of H2S contained in a 12-liter flask calculating Kc and Kp
