Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The compound XY is formed when X reacts with Y and XZ3 is formed when X is reacts with Z. The molar mass of X and Z should be predicted.
Concept Introduction:
Molar mass is defined as an average

Answer to Problem 60A
The molar mass of X = 20 gmol-1
The molar mass of Z = 40 gmol-1
Explanation of Solution
The mass ratio of element X and Y is 1:3.
The molar ratio of X and Y is 1:1
The molar mass of Y is given which is 60 gmol-1. So, the molar mass of X is 60/3 = 20 gmol-1
The mass ratio of element X and element Z is 1:6.
The molar ratio of X and Z is 1:6
The molar mass of X is 20g.
20 g of X reacts with 20×6 i.e. 120 g of Z
The molar mass of Z is shown below:
Molar mass of Z = 120/3
= 40 gmol-1
Thus,
The molar mass of X = 20 gmol-1
The molar mass of Z = 40 gmol-1
