Interpretation:
Using the method given in section 9.8A, the number of expected signals for each compound is to be determined.
Concept introduction:
In order to identify the environment of the hydrogen (proton) in the molecule, this hydrogen atom is replaced with some other group or atom and use the result.
If same compound is obtained by replacing the hydrogen with some other group or atom, then the hydrogen is homotopic and will have the same chemical shift.
If different compound is obtained by replacing the hydrogen with some other group or atom, then the hydrogen is heterotopic and will have different chemical shift.
