Chapter 8.3, Problem 139E
The Coruro’s Burrow. The subterranean coruro (Spalacopus cyanus) is a social rodent that lives in large colonies in underground burrow that can reach lengths of up in 600 meters. Zoologists S. Begall and M. Gallardo studied the characteristics of the burrow systems of the subterranean coruro in central Chile and published their findings in the paper “Spalacopus cyanus (Rodentia: Octodontidae): An Extremist in Tunnel Constructing and Food Storing among Subterranean Mammals” (Journal of Zoology, Vol, 251, pp. 53–60). A sample of 51 burrows had the depths, in centimeters (cm), presented on the WeissStats site. Use the technology of your choice in do the following.
- a. Obtain a normal probability plot, boxplot, histogram, and stem- and-leaf diagram of the data.
- b. Based on your results from part (a), can you reasonably apply the t-interval procedure to the data? Explain your reasoning.
- c. Find and interpret a 90% confidence interval for the
mean depth of all subterranean coruro burrows.

3) An inventor has developed a new spray coating that is designed to improve the wear of bicycle tires. To test
the new coating, the inventor randomly selects one of the two tires on each of 50 bicycles to be coated with
the new spray. The bicycle is then driven for 100 miles and the amount of the depth of the tread left on the
two bicycle tires is measured (in millimeters). It is desired to determine whether the new spray coating
improves the wear of the bicycle tires. The data and summary information is shown below:

Anthropologists are still trying to unravel the mystery of the origins of the Etruscan empire, a highly advanced Italic civilization formed around the eighth century B.C. in central Italy. Were they native to the Italian peninsula or, as many aspects of their civilization suggest, did they migrate from the East by land or sea? The maximum head breadth, in millimeters, of 70 modern Italian male skulls and 84 preserved Etruscan male skulls was analyzed to help researchers decide whether the Etruscans were native to Italy. The resulting data can be found on the WeissStats site. [SOURCE: N. Barnicot and D.
