Chapter 8.1, Problem 23E

Giant Tarantulas. A tarantula has two body parts. The anterior part of the body is covered above by a shell, or carapace. In the paper “Reproductive Biology of Uruguayan Theraphosids” (The Journal of Arachnology, Vol. 30, No. 3, pp. 571–587), F. Costa and F. Perez-Miles discussed a large species of tarantula whose common name is the Brazilian giant lawny red. A simple random sample of 15 of these adult male tarantulas provided the following data on carapace length, in millimeters (mm).

Chapter 8.1, Problem 23E, Giant Tarantulas. A tarantula has two body parts. The anterior part of the body is covered above by

  1. a. Obtain a normal probability plot of the data.
  2. b. Based on your result from part (a), is it reasonable to presume that carapace length of adult male Brazilian giant tawny red tarantulas is normally distributed? Explain your answer.
  3. c. Find and interpret a 95% confidence interval for the mean carapace length of all adult male Brazilian giant tawny red tarantulas. The population standard deviation is 1.76 mm.
  4. d. In Exercise 6.97, we noted that the mean carapace length of all adult male Brazilian giant tawny red tarantulas is 18.14 mm. Does your confidence interval in part (c) contain the population mean? Would it necessarily have to? Explain your answers.

Giant Tarantulas. One of the larger species of tarantulas is the Grammostola mollicoma, whose common name is the Brazilian giant tawny red. A tarantula has two body parts. The anterior part of the body is covered above by a shell, or carapace. From a recent article by F. Costa and F. Perez–Miles titled “Reproductive Biology of Uruguayan Theraphosids” (The Journal of Arachnology, Vol. 30, No. 3, pp. 571–587), we find that the carapace length of the adult male G. mollicoma is normally distributed with a mean of 18.14 mm and a standard deviation of 1.76 mm. Let x denote carapace length for the adult male G. mollicoma. a. Sketch the distribution of the variable x. b. Obtain the standardized version, z, of x. c. Identify and sketch the distribution of z. d. The percentage of adult male G. mollicoma that have carapace length between 16 mm and 17 mm is equal to the area under the standard normal curve between _____ and _____. e. The percentage of adult male G. mollicoma that have carapace…
Researchers studying the number of electric fish species living in various parts of the Amazon basin were interested in whether the presence of tributaries affected the local number of electric fish species in the main rivers (Fernandes et al. 2004) They counted the number of electric fish species above and below the entrance point of a major tributary at 12 different river locations. Here is what they found: Upstream number of Downstream number of species species Tributary Içá Jutaí Japurá Coari Purus 14 19 11 8. 18 5 10 16 Manacapuru 6 Negro 23 24 Madeira 29 Trombetas 19 16 Tapajós 16 25 20 Xingu Tocantins 21 10 12 What is the 95% confidence interval of the difference of means, ? Round your answers to two decimal places.
It is the entire group of objects or individuals that are being studied.
