Chapter 8.2, Problem 101E
Clocking the Cheetah. The cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) is the fastest land mammal and is highly specialized to run down prey. The cheetah often exceeds speeds of 60 mph and, according to the online document “Cheetah Conservation in Southern Africa” (Trade & Environment Database (TED) Case Studies. Vol. 8, No. 2) by J. Urbaniak, the cheetah is capable of speeds up to 72 mph, The WeissStats site contains the top speeds, in miles per hour, for a sample of 35 cheetahs. Use the technology of your choice to do the following tasks.
- a. Find a 95% confidence interval for the
mean top speed, μ, of all cheetahs. Assume that the population standard deviation of top speeds is 3.2 mph. - b. Obtain a normal probability plot, boxplot, histogram, and stem- and-leaf diagram of the data.
- c. Remove the outliers (if any) from the data, and then repeal part (a).
- d. Comment on the advisability of using the z-interval procedure on these data.

One of the variables is HeartRate and another is Statuswhich indicates whether the patient lived (Status=0) or died (Status=1). The computer output below shows the details of a test to determine whether mean heart rate is different between patients who lived and died. (You should not do any computations. Does it take longer to learn in the winter when babies are often bundled in clothes that restrict their movement? Data were collected from parents who brought their babies into the University of Denver Infant Study Center to participate in one of a number of experiments between 1988 and 1991. Parents reported the birth month and the age at which their child was first able to creep or crawl a distance of four feet within one minute. The resulting data were grouped by month of birth. Studies are performed to estimate the percentage of the nation’s 10 million asthmatics who are allergic to sulfites. In one survey, 38 of 500 randomly selected U.S. asthmatics were found to be allergic to sulfites. 95% confidence. Determine the margin of error for the estimate of p. A sample of 16 healthy women aged 18 to 40 were randomly assigned to drink 24 ounces of either diet cola or water. Their urine was collected for three hours after ingestion of the beverage and calcium excretion (in mg) was measured. The summary statistics for diet cola are x¯1=56.0 with s1=4.93 and n1=8 and the summary statistics for water are x¯2=49.1 with s2=3.64 and n2=8. Figure 1 shows dotplots of the data values. Test whether there is evidence that diet cola leaches calcium out of the system, which would increase the amount of calcium in the urine for diet cola drinkers. Use a t-distribution, after first checking that the conditions are met. The data are stored in ColaCalcium. Figure 1 Do diet cola drinkers excrete more calcium?
