Given:
The sequence 12,22,32,42,52,...
Concept used:
A sequence is arithmetic when the differences between consecutive terms are the same. So, the sequence
a1,a2,a3,....,an,..... is arithmetic when there is a number d such that
a2−a1=a3−a2=a4−a3=an+1−an=.....=d
The number d is called the common difference of the arithmetic sequence.
Calculation:
Calculate the difference between a2 and a1 .
d1=a2−a1=22−12=4−1=3
Calculate the difference between a3 and a2 .
d2=a3−a2=32−22=9−4=5
Calculate the difference between a4 and a3 .
d3=a4−a3=42−32=16−9=7
Calculate the difference between a5 and a4 .
d4=a5−a4=52−42=25−16=9
From the above calculation the difference between each two term is not common. So the sequence is not arithmetic.
