Question
Chapter 5, Problem 5.61P
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
The measured rotation of plane polarized light, sent through the given solution, is to be calculated.
Concept introduction:
The ability of a mixture of enantiomers to rotate the plane polarized light is governed by the percentage of the enantiomer which is in excess. If a given mixture is excess in the (+) enantiomer, then the rotation of the plane polarized light will be in the (+) direction.
The measured rotation is calculated using the concentration of the solution, the specific rotation, and the length of the tube. The concentration must be in g/mL, and the length of the tube must be in decimeters.

The quantitative differences in biological activity between the two enantiomers of a compound are sometimes quite large. For example, the D isomer of the drug isoproterenol, used to treat mild asthma, is 50 to 80times more effective as a bronchodilator than the L isomer. Identify the chiral center in isoproterenol. Why do the two enantiomers have such radically different bioactivity?
Which of these rotates plane-polarized light
