Concept explainers
(a)
Interpretation:
Zigzag conformation of the given molecule is to be drawn.
Concept introduction:
For a stereochemical projection for an acyclic molecule, the main chain is represented by a zigzag line in the plane, which is shown by solid lines, and the substituents are shown above or below the plane by using wedges and dashed-lines.

- Consider the molecule 1-bromo-2-methylbutane. C3 and C4 should be drawn as Et as in theexample. This group is called an ethyl group and can be considered a sphere about twice the sizeof a methyl group. Draw the following Newman projections sighting down the C1C2 bond... a. The lowest potential energy conformation. b. The highest potential energy staggered conformation.arrow_forwardFor the following molecule, draw both chair conformations. - I don't understand why the first one and second one are cis and trans respectively. Wouldn't the first one be trans-1,2-dimethylcyclobutane because the torsional strain wouldn't allow the carbons to be in the same conformation. Meaning one of the carbons would be up and then the next would be down and so on. Since both methyl groups are equatorial and the first and second carbons are arranged up and down, wouldn't it be trans. Same logic for the second molecule. Carbon 1, which is attached to the methyl is down, carbon 3 which is attached to the methyl should be down also because of torsional strain, and since both methyl are in axial (or equatorial?), it would be cis. Or is it based off of the way the carbons are positioned in the picture?arrow_forwardDraw a chair conformation of this molecule with (a) all CH3 groups in axial positions and (b) all CH3 groups in equatorial positions.arrow_forwardWhich of the following is a Newman projection for the following compound as viewed down the indicated bond in the conformation shown?
