Chapter 5, Problem 5.59P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The specific rotation of the enantiomer of Taxol is to be determined.

Concept introduction:

Specific rotation is the angle of rotation of light of a particular wavelength if it passed through a sample having concentration 1 g/mL and length 1 dm. The temperature is written in degrees Celsius. Specific rotation is reported as [α]D20, where 20 is the temperature in degree Celsius and D stands for the sodium line (589.6 nm). The specific rotation of enantiomers is equal in magnitude but opposite in direction.

a) Draw the two chair conformations for the compound below, indicating which is more stable. OH CHO b) This molecule is a compound with an intense flowery odor used in perfumes, but it isomerizes rapidly in base to its odorless diastereoisomer. Draw the chair conformation of this diastereoisomer and explain why the isomerization occurs readily.
Draw the boat conformation of the structure 2,4-dibromocylohexane. Are there any chiral centers present? If so, label them.
Draw both chair conformations of the six membered rings below and circle the lowest energy conformation. If they are equal in energy circle both structures. Draw out all of the H atoms on your chair structure and clearly indicate the directionality for all of the H and non-H substituents.
