A radar station sends a signal to a ship which is located a distance 13.8 kilometers from the station at bearing 136° clockwise from the north. At the same moment, a helicopter is at a horizontal range of 19.6 kilometers, at bearing 154° clockwise from the north, with an elevation of 2.53 kilometers. Let east be the î direction, north be the ĵ direction, and up be the direction.
c) What If? The ship begins to sink at a rate of 5.30 m/s. Write the position vector (in km) of the ship relative to the helicopter as a function of time as the ship sinks. Assume that the helicopter remains hovering at its initial position and that the sinking rate remains the same even after the ship sinks under the surface.
d)Evaluate the position of the ship relative to the helicopter (in km) after 1.60 h.

His ships log instructs you to start at tree A and move toward tree B, but to cover only one-half the distance between A and B. Then move toward tree C, covering one-third the distance between your current location and C. Next move toward tree D, covering one-fourth the distance between where you are and D. Finally move toward tree E, covering one-fifth the distance between you and E, stop, and dig. (a) Assume you have correctly determined the order in which the pirate labeled the trees as A, B, C, D, and E as shown in the figure. What are the coordinates of the point where his treasure is buried? (b) What If? What if you do not really know the way the pirate labeled the trees? What would happen to the answer if you rearranged the order of the trees, for instance, to B (30 m, 20 m), A (60 m, 80 m), E (10 m, 10 m), C (40 m, 30 m), and D (70 m, 60 m)? State reasoning to show that the answer does not depend on the order in which the trees are labeled. Figure 1.69arrow_forward

- You have been asked to determine if a proposed apparatus to implant ions in silicon to make better semiconductors will work. The apparatus slows down positive He ions that have a charge twice that of an electron (He++). It consists of a circular wire that is connected to a power supply so that it becomes a negatively charged circle. An ion with a velocity of 200 m/s on a trajectory perpendicular to the plane of the circle is shot out from the center of the circle. The wire circle has a radius of 3.0 cm and can have a charge up to 8.0 C. The sample into which the ion is to be implanted is to be placed 2.5 mm from the charged circle. You look up the charge of an electron and mass of the helium and find them to be 1.6 × 10-19 C and 6.7 x 10-27 kg. [Hint: You want the ion to come to rest just as it reaches the sample. Use the potential along the axis of a charged ring and conservation of energy.]arrow_forwardConsider the vectors: A = 2î + 5j. B = 5î + 4j, and C = À - B. The Ferris wheel takes 2.5 minutes to go through a full cycle. Let us set up our coordinate system so that the motion of the wheel is in the = 0) plane, our car stars at the origin at time zero, and we initially start moving in the +y direction. Assuming that the Ferris wheel movies steadily and never stops, write parametric equations to describe the motion of a car on the Ferris wheel, with x, y, z in meters and in seconds. r(t) = y(t) z(t)arrow_forward
- How would I begin to solve this problem? In Example 2.6, we considered a simple model for a rocket launched from the surface of the Earth. A better expression for a rocket's position measured from the center of the Earth is given by y(t) = (RE3/2 + 3*(g/2)1/2 REt)2/3 where RE is the radius of the Earth (6.38 ✕ 106 m) and g is the constant acceleration of an object in free fall near the Earth's surface (9.81 m/s2).
