Interpretation:

The number of photons of light emitted when the electron in a hydrogen atom drops from energy level 4 to 1, is to be identified.

Concept Introduction:

Concept of electron energy level was supported by the line spectrum of hydrogen. In a gas discharge tube, excited atoms of hydrogen have electron in a high energy orbit. In the process, when electron drops from the higher energy level to lower energy level, the electron loses a discrete amount of energy. In the hydrogen spectrum when the electron drops to energy level 1, the energy of photon is in the ultraviolet region and therefore not visible.
