Chapter 4, Problem 11E
A new process has been developed for applying photoresist to 125-mm silicon wafers used in manufacturing integrated circuits. Ten wafers were tested, and the following photoresist thickness measurements (in angstroms x 1000) were observed: 13.3987, 13.3957, 13.3902, 13.4015, 13.4001, 13.3918, 13.3965, 13.3925, 13.3946, and 13.4002.
- (a) Test the hypothesis that
mean thickness is 13.4 × 1000 Å. Use α = 0.05 and assume a two-sided alternative. - (b) Find a 99% two-sided confidence interval on mean photoresist thickness. Assume that thick-ness is
normally distributed. - (c) Does the normality assumption seem reasonable for these data?

A new process has been developed for applying photoresist to 125-mm silicon wafers used in
manufacturing integrated circuits. Ten wafers were tested, and the following photoresist
thickness measurements (in angstroms × 1000) were observed: 13.3987, 13.3957, 13.3902,
13.4015, 13.4001, 13.3918, 13.3965, 13.3925, 13.3946, and 13.4002. (For your convenience,
we have calculated sample mean: 13.4 and sample standard deviation: 0.0039. You can use
them directly.)
(a) Test the hypothesis that mean thickness is 13.4 × 1000 Å. Use a = 0.2 and assume a two-
sided alternative.
(b) Find a 90% two-sided confidence interval on mean photoresist thickness. Assume that
thickness is normally distributed.

(a) Is this data a realization of a random sample? Provide rationale for your
answer (you may list pros and cons if you like). (b) Which population quantities
(mean, variance, probabilities of certain events) would you like to use these data
to estimate and why? (The answers to these questions are subjective).

The main component part of the housing is a steel trough that is made out of a 14-gauge steel coil. It is pro- duced using a 250-ton progressive punch press with a wipe-down operation that puts two 90-degree forms in the flat steel to make the trough. The distance from one side of the form to the other is critical because of weatherproofing in outdoor applications. The company requires that the width of the trough be between 8.31 inches and 8.61 inches. - A certain species of tree has an average life span of 130 years. A researcher has noticed a large number of trees of this species washing up along a beach as driftwood. She takes core samples from 27 of those trees to count the number of rings and measure the widths of the rings. Counting the rings allows the researcher to determine the age of each tree. Her data are displayed in the provided table. 98 79 147 200 130 60 51 127 105 75 120 113 200 190 81 98 160 165 134 62 152 66 68 124 190 159 60 One of her interests is determining if this sample provides evidence that the average age of the driftwood is less than the 130 year life span expected for this type of tree. If the average age is less than 130 years it might suggest that the trees have died from unusual causes, such as invasive beetles or logging. Too much tension will tear the mesh, and too little will allow wrinkles. The tension is measured by an electrical device with output readings in millivolts (mV).
