Chapter 33.3, Problem 1.4RIA
Summary Introduction
The mammalian hosts also possess some specific chemical barriers. These barriers help them to fight against the continuous onslaught of the pathogens. The innate resistance of the mammals relies on the chemical mediators. This includes cationic peptides, cytokines, bacteriocins, acute-phase proteins, and the complement system. The complement system is made up of a huge number of serum proteins which plays a defensive immune response in mammals. Three pathways of complement activation are there, namely, the lectin, alternative, and classical pathways.

The tetanus toxin tetanospasmin blocks release of the neurotransmitter (GABA) that inhibits motor neurons and decreases muscle contraction. This causes persistence of the signal to contract and the resulting violent muscle contraction known as tetanic spasm. Compare the sustained contraction of muscle cells in rigor mortis with muscle contraction caused by the action of tetanospasmin on motor neurons.
Describe experiments using marker molecules that have been done to elucidate important properties of (1) tight junctions and (2) gap junctions, and propose one additional experiment you could do with each junction to gain a greater understanding of that junction's properties.
Provide the two most important reasons that iPS cells were generated.
Define the main characteristics of a signal transduction pathway and give a specific example of such a pathway.

- Researchers have found that a certain signal transduction pathway, illustrated in the figure below, may be responsible for the development of cancer in pancreatic cells.
