Interpretation : The expression of numbers in scientific notation is to be determined
Concept Introduction : The essential advantage of scientific notation is that it enables us to change extraordinarily big or small numbers into dimensions that are significantly more understandable. When stated in scientific notation, these numbers are much easier to manipulate.
Answer to Problem 12LC
A given number is stated as the product of two numbers in scientific notation: a coefficient and 10 raised to a power.
Explanation of Solution
Every number bigger than one and less than 10 is a coefficient. There is an integer exponent.
The exponent is positive and equal to how many places the original decimal point has been pushed to the left when expressing values higher than 10 in scientific notation.
In scientific notation, exponents for numbers less than one are negative. The exponent's value is equal to how many places to the left the decimal has been pushed.
In the case of multiplication involved in scientific notation, the coefficients are multiplied while the exponents are added up.
In the case of the division involved, the coefficients are divided while subtracting the exponent in the denominator from the numerator exponent.
Thus, a given number is stated as the product of two numbers in scientific notation: a coefficient and 10 raised to a power.
