Chapter 3, Problem 5P
Interpretation Introduction

(a) Interpretation:

The concentration of both phosphate and glucose in a liver cell at 37°C is maintained at about 5mm and the equilibrium concentration of glucose-6-phoisphate to be identified with the given data.

Concept introduction:

As per the data given phosphorylation of glucose is the initial reaction in glycolysis which is:

Pi + glucose → glucose-6-phosphate + H2O

The above process becomes thermodynamically unfavorable with ΔG°' = +13.8KJ/mol. Therefore it is observed that the phosphorylation of glucose to glucose-6-phosphate in glycolysis the standard fee energy change is +13.8Kj/mol.

Interpretation Introduction

(b) Interpretation:

The value of ∆G°' for the coupled reaction is to be identified.

Concept introduction:

In glycolysis very low concentration of the desired product would be unfavorable and hence the reaction is coupled to ATP hydrolysis to give the following overall reaction as from the given data:

ATP + glucose → glucose-6-phosphate +ADP+H+

Interpretation Introduction

(c) Interpretation:

When the glucose-6-phosphate is concentrated at equilibrium with pH of 7.4 and at 37°C an absurdly high value for the cell is obtained and that never happens in a reality. The explanation for such situation should be provided.

Conceptintroduction:

As per the given data:

The ATP concentration is 3mm which is 0.003 M and the ADP concentration is 1mm which is 0.001 M and the glucose concentration is 0.005 M. As already obtained from part b the value of ∆G° is -18.4 kJ/mol and as given the temperature is at 37°C.
