Chapter 3, Problem 3.124ACI

Evaluating the performance of quality inspectors. The performance of quality inspectors affects both the quality of outgoing products and the cost of the products. A product that passes inspection is assumed to meet quality standards; a product that fails inspection may be reworked, scrapped, or reinspected. Quality engineers at an electric company evaluated performances of inspectors in judging the quality of solder joints by comparing each inspector's classifications of a set of 153 joints with the consensus evaluation of a panel of experts. The results for a particular inspector are shown in the table. One of the 153 solder joints was selected at random.

Chapter 3, Problem 3.124ACI, Evaluating the performance of quality inspectors. The performance of quality inspectors affects both

  1. a. What is the probability that the inspector judged the joint to be acceptable? That the committee judged the joint to be acceptable?
  2. b. What is the probability that both the inspector and the committee judged the joint to be acceptable? That neither judged the joint to be acceptable?
  3. c. What is the probability that the inspector and the committee disagreed? Agreed?

A veterinarian wishes to compare the number of times race horses are reported to be lame during a 12‑month period, as compared with similar horses that are not raced. The veterinarian is particularly interested in whether the exercise schedule used in racing contributes to lameness, rather than the total amount of exercise. The veterinarian feels horses to be compared should be similar with regard to age, breed, and the number of weekly hours spent exercising. Which of the given study types should be used?   Group of answer choices a. A matched design in which a race horse is chosen, and a horse that is the same age, the same breed, and exercised the same number of hours is chosen for comparison. b. A horse is chosen and raced for one year, but is not raced the next year. c. A group of race horses is chosen and then, from a nearby barn, a group of horses that do not race is chosen. d. Over a nine-month period, OutdoorGearLab tested hardshell jackets designed for ice climbing, mountaineering, and backpacking. Based on the breathability, durability, versatility, features, mobility, and weight of each jacket, an overall rating ranging from O (lowest) to 15 (highest) was assigned to each jacket tested. The following data show the results for 10 top-of-the line jackets (OutdoorGearLab website, February 27, 2013). Answer questions 10-14. Table 2. 5 12 6 8 5 6 7 5 12 4
