Introduction: Phenylketonuria (PKU) is an inherited disorder under which phenylketones are present in high levels in urine and phenylalanine in blood. This condition arises due to the inability to breakdown an amino acid phenylalanine. The enzyme responsible for phenylalanine catabolism is defective in this genetic disease. This causes mental retardation.
