To determine:
Some of the consequences of human activities on the nitrogen cycle.
Introduction:
Nitrogen is an important component in proteins, many vitamins, nucleotides, and nucleic acids. The nitrogen cycle represents a pathway through which nitrogen from its primary reservoir as nitrogen gas in the atmosphere passed to much smaller reservoirs of ammonia and nitrate in soil and water, through different trophic levels, and back to its primary reservoirs.

- In terms of the nitrogen cycle and movement of electrons, what is the difference between nitrogen fixation and assimilatory nitrate reductionarrow_forwardDefine the following terms:a. nitrogen fixationb. nitrogenasec. nitrogen assimilationd. amino acid poole. nitrogen cyclearrow_forwardDraw out the the eight parts of the nitrogen cycle. Explain each of the parts with 2 sentences.arrow_forward
- What is the nitrogen cycle? (This question is asking for a general overview)arrow_forwardIn the nitrogen cycle, ? Occurs when nitrogen gas is converted to form usable to plants, often by nitrogen-fixing ?arrow_forwardWe have seen that energy is essential for life on earth. All organisms need energy to maintain their cellular processes. There are two basic ways of generating energy de novo, at the base of food webs. Describe the two primary ways that autotrophic organisms generate energy, including the original source of energy and the primary organisms that carry out each process.arrow_forward
- Which of the following statements about the nitrogen cycle is false? a. Ammonification converts organic nitrogenous matter from living organisms into ammonium (NH4 +). b. Denitrification by bacteria converts nitrates (NO3 −) to nitrogen gas (N2). c. Nitrification by bacteria converts nitrates (NO3 −) to nitrites (NO2 −). d. Nitrogen fixing bacteria convert nitrogen gas (N2) into organic compounds.arrow_forwardWhich of the following best describes how using fertilizer would affect the nitrogen cycle? The use of fertilizer would result in more nitrogen in the groundwater. The use of fertilizer would result in less nitrogen in the soil. The use of fertilizer would result in more phosphorus in the soil. The use of fertilizer would result in more nitrogen being added to the carbon cycle.arrow_forwardRefer to Fig. 5.5. and redraw the important transformations of fixed nitrogen in ecosystems. Note the following processes: biological N fixation, non-biological N-fixation, ammonification, nitrification, denitrification. Nitrogen fixing bacteria exist on the root nodules of legumes and in the soil. Denitrifying bacteria convert nitrates (NO3 ) into nitrogen gas (N2). Ammonification is the process by which ammonium ion (NH4+) is released from decomposing organic compounds. Nitrification is the process by which nitrites (NO2-) are converted to ammonium ion (NH4+).arrow_forwardFigure 46.17 Which of the following statements about the nitrogen cycle is false?
