Concept explainers
(a)
To Explain: Whether the current induced in the wire will move to the right or left.
(a)
Answer to Problem 63A
The current will move towards the left with the help of right-hand rule.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
As per Fleming’s right hand rule, if one stretches the thumb, index and middle fingers of right hand so that they are perpendicular to each other, then the thumb points in the direction of motionof the conductor placed in the magnetic field when the forefinger points towards direction of the magnetic field and middle finger points towards the direction of the flow of current in the conductor.
Point the thumb downwards and middle finger from left to right in the direction of the magnetic field, then using Fleming’s right hand rule, the current will flow into the plane of the paper.
Conclusion:
Hence, the current will move into the plane of the paper.
(b)
To Explain: The direction of the force which is acting on the wire.
(b)
Answer to Problem 63A
The force acting on the wire will be in the downwards direction.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
As per Fleming’s left hand rule, if one stretches the thumb, index and middle fingers of left hand so that they are perpendicular to each other, then the thumb points towards the direction of force experienced by the conductor placed in the magnetic field when the forefinger points towards magnetic field’s direction and middle finger points in the direction of the current’s flow in the conductor.
A current moving in a magnetic field experiences magnetic force. The field is from left to right and the direction of the current is into the paper, then the direction of force as determined by Fleming’s left hand rule is downwards.
Conclusion:
Hence, the force acting on the wire will be in the downward direction.
