Interpretation:
An argument supporting or opposing nuclear power as the state’s primary power source needs to be formulated.
Concept introduction:
Nuclear power is defined as the generation of heat by releasing nuclear energy, using nuclear reactions in the process. Nuclear fission, nuclear reactions, nuclear decay etc. can be used to generate nuclear power.
Answer to Problem 25SSC
An argument supporting nuclear power is that it does not generate greenhouse gases and can reduce air pollution. An argument opposing nuclear power is that the disposal of nuclear waste is not easy, leakage of the nuclear reactors and fear of radiation.
Explanation of Solution
The nuclear power plays an important role in the environment. The nuclear power does not generate greenhouse gases and it is more climate-friendly than that of the fossil fuels. A good argument can also be that, nuclear power also leads to reduction of air pollution, lesser destruction of environment in mining, transportation of fuels and fewer wastes.
The arguments opposing the use of the nuclear energy can be that it is problematic to dispose the nuclear waste that remain radioactive long after the fuel has been used, and also the safety issues about the fear of the radiation as well as the fear of the leaking of nuclear reactors.
Use of nuclear power has various merits and demerits. It has a huge effect on the environment.
