Energy is needed by the body to carry out metabolic activities necessary to sustain life. The total amount of energy that is expended by the body to poser all its processes is termed as the metabolic rate. The heat generated by these processes are utilized for thermoregulation. There are different ways of measuring the metabolic rate of the body.
