Explanation of Solution

Introduction:In neutralization reaction, an acid and a base react to form salt and water.

In the neutralization reaction, hydrochloric acid when reacts with sodium hydroxide, forms sodium chloride & water molecules.

The chemical equation for the above reaction:

  $\text{HCl+NaOH}\to {\text{NaCl+H}}_2\text{O}$

The hydrogen ion from $\text{HCl}$ and the hydroxide ion from $\text{NaOH}$ reacts to form water.

  $\text{NaOH}$ contributes the sodium ion ( ${\text{Na}}^{+}$ ) which reacts with the chloride ion ( ${\text{Cl}}^{-}$ ) of $\text{HCl}$ to form $\text{NaCl}$ salt.

Conclusion: Hydrochloric acid is neutralized by sodium hydroxide forming sodium chloride and water molecules. Sodium hydroxide contributes the salt’s positive ion and hydrochloric acid contributes the salt’s negative ion.
