How does the temperature of a gas change when it is compressed? When it expands?
To Explain: The change in the temperature of a gas when it is compressed or expanded.
Answer to Problem 8A
The compression of gas will raise the temperature and the expansion will drop the temperature.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
On compression, the particles of the gas come closer and so the pressure increases which increases the temperature. On expansion, the pressure lowers down which results to drop the temperature.
On compression, the density of the particles increases which increases the pressure. So the particle can hold more amount of energy. On expansion, the density of the particle is lower down and this decreases the pressure. The particle release heat energy in the environment during their expansion.
Conclusion:
Hence, compression of gas will raise the temperature and the expansion will drop the temperature.
