Concept explainers
To Explain: The meaning of thesaying that a coldis not a tangible thing.
Answer to Problem 5A
Cold substance is not tangible due to deficiency of heat.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
A tangible substance is the one which can be easily perceived in the real world and can be felt by touching it. For example: Books, furniture, building, utensils, etc.
There are some things around us which cannot be touched, they can only be felt like, warmth, sorrow, happiness, cold, etc.
Thermal expansion results the change in the dimension and area of a substance. Any substance which contains heat energy changes its shape which is because of kinetic energy of its molecules. A cold object does not contain heat and so molecules do not expand rather they only contract. Therefore, cold objects are not tangible due to lack of heat in their internal molecules.
Conclusion:
Hence, cold object is not tangible due to lack of heat.
