Chapter 22, Problem 22.19P
Interpretation Introduction

(a)

Interpretation: The product formed from the treatment of acetic acid with the given reagent is to be stated.

Concept introduction: Carboxylic acids are strong organic acids. They undergo acid-base reaction with amines to yield an ammonium salt of carboxylate anion. It is a single step reaction.

Interpretation Introduction

(b)

Interpretation: The product formed from the treatment of acetic acid with the given reagent is to be stated.

Concept introduction: Carboxylic acids are strong organic acids. They undergo acid-base reaction with amines to yield an ammonium salt of carboxylate anion. Further heating at high temperature (greater than 100°C) dehydrates the obtained ammonium salt to amide. Water is removed as the by-product.

Interpretation Introduction

(c)

Interpretation: The product formed from the treatment of acetic acid with the given reagent is to be stated.

Concept introduction: The full form of DCC is dicyclohexylcarbodiimide. It is a dehydrating agent. The treatment of carboxylic acid with an amine and DCC leads to the formation of an amide and dicyclohexylurea as the by-product, (formed when small amount of H2O is added).
