Interpretation:

The structure of D-galactose by using arguments similar to those used by Fischer to prove the structure of D-glucose is to be stated.

Concept Introduction:

Kiliani-Fischer performed a synthesis on the ()arabinose and the two sugars were obtained that are (+)glucose and (+)mannose.  This means that (+)glucose and (+)mannose are the C-2 epimer.  There are 16 stereoisomers of aldohexose are known which are actually eight pairs of enantiomers.  So, by knowing the structure of one of the set of eight, we can determine the structure of other eight.
