Interpretation:
To write the balanced chemical equation for each of the given steps and show that their sum is decomposition of water to produce hydrogen and oxygen.
Concept introduction: Hydrogen can be produced by a recently suggested method. It is a three-step process and is known as a sulfur-iodine cycle. The cycle starts with sulfur dioxide, water and iodine to form sulfuric acid and hydrogen iodide. Sulfuric acid decomposed to water, sulfur dioxide and oxygen. Hydrogen iodide is decomposed into hydrogen and iodine.
The net reaction of these three steps is the decomposition of water to hydrogen and oxygen.
However, an efficient source of heat is required for this process.
There are some disadvantages to this method. A very high-temperature condition is required and the reagents used are corrosive.
