Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The name of the proteins which catalyze biochemical reactions in the cell needs to be determined.
Concept Introduction:
Some of the proteins act as biocatalysts which accelerate many biochemical reactions taking place inside living cells.
Answer to Problem 19A
Proteins which catalyze the biochemical reactions in the cells are known as enzymes.
Explanation of Solution
There are different enzymes which perform various biochemical reactions in the cells. By nature all the enzymes are proteins. These enzymes can be different types based on substrate and functions. Some enzymes work on peptide bond hydrolysis. Those are known as peptidases. Some enzymes transfer groups from one molecule to other. These are known as kinases. These all enzymes are proteins.
Thus, proteins which catalyze biochemical reactions in the cell are named as enzymes.
