Concept explainers
Interpretation:
Define solvation and mention its importance for dissolving ionic salts in water.
Concept introduction:
Solvation is the process of ions being surrounded by solvent molecules.

Answer to Problem 83A
Solvation is the way a solvent interacts with dissolved molecules or ions. The molecules or ions get surrounded by the solvent molecules effectively forming a shell around them. This is especially helpful for ionic solutions as solvated ions do not interact much with each other, reducing the chance of rebonding.
Explanation of Solution
Solvation occurs due to the difference in charges and the attraction of opposite charges. The solvent shell formed due to solvation increases the distance between the solute ions, so they are not able to interact with each other in solution.
The phenomenon of solvation and its utility in ionic solutions has been described above.
