The charge capacity of a battery can be determined using a pH meter. If the pH of the battery acid is higher than that of a new battery, it means that the battery acidity is decreasing, and it cannot deliver a full charge.
Explanation of Solution
When a battery is not given full charge continuously many times, sulfation occurs in the battery acid and the acidity of the acid decreases, which does not allow the battery to get fully charged. This decrease in acidity can be measured with a pH meter which will show higher pH than usual and the running down of battery can be determined.
Whether a lead acid battery is running down or not can be determined by its acidity level.
