Answer to Problem 22SSC
Electrolysis is a process in which decomposition of electrolyte occurs when flow of electricity from its aqueous solution or molten state occurs. In electrolysis external voltage is applied which reverses the movement of electron in cell, so it drives non-spontaneous reaction.
Explanation of Solution
Electrolysis is a process in which decomposition of electrolyte occurs on flow of electricity through its aqueous solution or molten state. The instrument used to carry out electrolysis is electrolytic cell. Example of electrolytic cell is when a secondary battery is recharged.
In a secondary battery current when passed in reverse direction can be recharged. Generally electrons flow readily from anode to cathode through external circuit, which results flow of current. It a spontaneous process and goes until whole of anode gets used up and battery becomes dead.
But when current flows in reverse direction through external voltage source, battery gets recharged. External voltage source is used to drive a non spontaneous reaction.
Electrolysis is a process in which decomposition of electrolyte occurs when flow of electricity from its aqueous solution or molten state occurs. In electrolysis external voltage is applied which reverses the movement of electron in cell, so it drives non-spontaneous reaction.
