Chapter 2, Problem 79A
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The reason for the production of gas does not always show a chemical reaction that needs to be explained.

Concept Introduction: When a substance changes its appearance or change in the state takes place and there is no change in its chemical composition, the change is said to be physical. On the other hand, when there is a change in the chemical composition of a substance or a new substance is formed after a chemical reaction, it is known as a chemical change.

Explanation of Solution

A chemical reaction can result in the production of gas if the new substance is formed from the reactant and the substance formed is gaseous. This gas formation can also take place in a physical change. It takes place when a liquid is converted into gas. In the formation of gas, the composition remains the same, and only the phase changes from liquid to vapor.

Thus, if gas is released due to a change in the physical state then it is a physical change, but if gas is released due to a chemical reaction, it is a chemical change.
