Chapter 19.2, Problem 2QC
Summary Introduction
To review:
The differences between oxyhaemoglobin, deoxyhaemoglobin, carbaminohaemoglobin, and carboxyhaemoglobin.
Introduction:
Each red blood cell contains cytoplasm surrounded with a plasma membrane. This cytosol contains enzymes and about 1 billion hemoglobin or Hb (oxygen-binding protein). Hemoglobin is a protein having four polypeptide subunits, namely, twoalpha (α) and two betas (β) chains. Heme group is the iron-containing compound that binds with each polypeptide chain. These heme groups can bind to different gases, including oxygen, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide.
