Interpretation:

The carbon atoms of glucose that ends up in ethanol under anaerobic conditions in yeast should be identified.

Concept Introduction:

  Glycolysis: It is pathway which describes conversion of one molecule of glucose into two molecules of pyruvate.  The series involves 10 reactions.

  Pyruvate under aerobic conditions:

• $\text{Pyruvate}\to \text{acetyl-CoA}$

Pyruvate under aerobic conditions:

• $\text{Pyruvate}\to \text{Lactate}$

Pyruvate in the presence of yeast:

• $\text{Pyruvate}\to \text{acetaldehyde }\to \text{ethanol}$
