Transposable elements, also known as transposons, are the jumping genes that can move or transpose between chromosomes. As these elements can insert themselves in any chromosome, viral genome, or plasmids, they are also known as insertion elements or IS elements. They can be found in both eukaryotes and prokaryotes. Barbara McClintock, in the year 1940, first discovered this type of element and got aNobelPrize for the same.
