A second propeller, identical to the one above, has also been damaged by an impact. This time, however, the damage is in the form of a crack at the base of one of the blades, as shown in the figure. Since the crack does not penetrate into the hub, it is proposed that a repair be made using some form of welding or brazing process. Would you recommend such a repair? If so, how would you suggest the repair be made? Explain the rationale for your recommendations and outline the procedure that should be followed. Would there be any sacrifice in quality or performance with the repaired propeller?

- Explain in your own words how the stress test (performance test) is applied to the patient turning apparatus shown in the figure, and guess how the expected result will be. The main part of the product consists of a polyurethane sponge. Stain-proof upholstery fabric will be used as the outer surface material. In addition, there are heating pads working with the logic of electric blankets in this apparatus, please answer by taking these into account when answering.arrow_forwardWhat are the procedures adopted to increase the fatigue resistance of: Spindle shaft; Welded joint; Aluminum sheet with hole; Gear.arrow_forwardHow can the direction of shear flow be established?arrow_forward
- A furniture company that makes upholstered chairs and sofas must cut large quantities of fabrics. Many of these fabrics are strong and wear-resistant, which properties make them difficult to cut. What nontraditional process(es) would you recommend to the company for this application? Justify your answer by indicating the characteristics of the process that make it attractive.arrow_forwardThe figure below shows a symmetric plane-strain upsetting process. The process may also be thought of as a form of side extrusion. Observations show that the deformation is confined to two shear planes, each one being analogous to that seen in plane-strain cutting. You may assume that there is no friction between the work material and the tool/die walls; the uniaxial yield strength of the material is σy and is independent of strain rate and temperature, and the material behaves as a rigid plastic solid. a) Calculate the pressure (p) required for the upsetting process in terms of σy. b) If friction existed at the die walls and the frictional work (energy) dissipation was 30% of the energy required for shape change alone (part (a) above), then what would be the pressure (p)?arrow_forwardHeat treatments optimize the performance and extend the life of gears in service by altering their chemical, metallurgical, and physical properties. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Support your opinion with FOUR (4) relevant examples of suitable process to prevent such a gear failurearrow_forward

- In this project, you have been asked to technically support the team in the following case: The team is working to select the best method to manufacture a steel threaded bolt, see Figure 2. You have been asked to figure out different alternatives to manufacture the bolt and make a comparison between the alternatives in terms of productivity, quality, surface finish, cost and others engineering factors. Which process do you recommend the most and why? thread nut runout shank radius head * grip length – nominal length thread length Figure 2: Threaded bolt and nut.arrow_forward(a) State 5 factors affecting chip formation during metal cutting (b) outline the principle of Ultrasonic testing for checking deeply imbedded defects in a welded jointarrow_forwardA pipe can be manufactured as (a) seamless (cold rolled and extruded) or (b) hot rolled and welded. (i) Describe the process for manufacturing each type of pipe: (a) Seamless (cold rolled and extruded) pipe; (b) Hot rolled and welded pipe. (ii) Why might a cold rolled seamless pipe be better suited to drilling operations than a hot rolled and welded pipe? A particle reinforced composite (containing flakes) has particles evenly distributed throughout the matrix where the rule of mixtures applies. (i) State THREE effects that a larger volume of carbon particles within the matrix produces. A drill bit is a cutting tool on the end of a rotary subsea drill. A Thermally Stable Polycrystalline (TSP) drill bit can be used to drill a subsea well. TSP bits are man-made polycrystalline structures consisting of a multitude of synthetic diamond crystals sintered together at high pressure and temperature, used to aid cutting into hard rock formations.
