Case Summary:
The nerve damage reduces salivary and lacrimal gland secretion.
Adequate Information:
Both lacrimal and salivary glands are innervated by the parasympathetic and sympathetic nerve fiber. That helps in controlling their secretions. The lacrimal gland secretes lacrimal fluid in the conjunctiva and cornea whereas; salivary gland secretes saliva in the mouth.
To determine:
The reduction in the secretion from salivary and lacrimal glands indicates damage to the nerve.
Given Information:
The ability of an individual to maintain homeostasis is completely based on the regulating activity of the ANS. Autonomic regulation is completely based on three components baroreceptors, chemoreceptors and sensory afferents. The signals produced by these receptors are integrated by the brain stem. It controls the functioning of several glands such as salivary glands. It controls two kinds of activity autonomic and local reflexes.

- Abnormal softening of the nerves is called ________________________ .arrow_forwardWhat is being attacked in Guillain-Barré syndrome? Relate the damage caused during this condition to the clinical manifestations evident in an affected personarrow_forwardMr. Q, age 64 years, developed a severe headache several hours ago that has not responded to acetaminophen (Tylenol). Now his speech is slurred, and his right arm and the right side of his face feel numb. He is very anxious and is transported to the hospital. Mr. Q has a history of smoking and arteriosclerosis, and there is a family history of CVA(Cerebrovascular Accident) and diabetes. Assessment at the hospital indicated weakness on the right side, including facial asymmetry and blood pressure of 220/110 Hg mm. A CT scan showed damaged tissue on the left side of the brain, and an angiography indicated a narrowing of the carotid arteries and middle cerebral arteries, with occlusion of the left middle cerebral artery. Explain the predisposing factors in this case, and relate Mr. Q’s initial signs to the pathological changes. Discuss the different types of disabilities That Mr.Q will face and possible treatments plans?arrow_forward

Carries commands to the eyes — to muscles that move the eyes or control pupil size and lens shape: 2. Carries commands to an extraocular eye muscle, the superior oblique muscle: 3. Carries commands to an extraocular eye muscle, the lateral rectus muscle: 4. Carries information from olfactory receptor cells in the nose: 5. Carries commands to muscles of facial expression (orbicularis oculi, etc.) and to glands, and carries information from taste buds in the tongue: 6. Carries commands to a pharyngeal muscle and gland, and carries information concerning taste or touch in the oral cavity and pharynx: 7. Splits into three branches; carries commands to the muscles of mastication (temporalis, etc.) and information from facial skin: 8. Carries commands to the tongue: 9.
