Concept explainers
Interpretation: The properties of acids and bases for their classification are to be studied.
Concept introduction: Acid is a substance that gives protons or hydrogen ions and base is a chemical substance that gives hydroxide ions in an aqueous solution.
Answer to Problem 1A
Acid and bases can be classified on the bases of several properties like change in colour of litmus paper, taste of substance, conduction and slippery texture.
Explanation of Solution
There are some properties of acid and bases helps in determining whether the substance is acidic or basic. Base is bitter in taste, feels slippery and it conducts electricity when it is dissolved in water. When red litmus paper is added to a basic solution, it turns into blue color. Acids are sour in taste, acid reacts with active metal to yield hydrogen gas, acid react with bases to produce salt compound and water. When blue litmus paper is added to a acidic solution, it turns into red color.
Classification of acids and bases can be done easily by using the properties. And both show different properties and characteristics which makes them easy to identify.
