Interpretation: The reason why gases in Earth’s atmosphere do not escape into the near-vacuum of space needs to be explained.
Concept Introduction: The diffusion of gases takes place from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration.
Explanation of Solution
Gases will diffuse from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration but still, the gases in the Earth’s atmosphere do not escape into the near-vacuum of space because of the gravitational force of the Earth. The gases in the atmosphere have mass thus, they feel the gravitational pull of the Earth. Due to this reason, diffusion of gases does not take place from the region of higher concentration that is Earth’s atmosphere to the region of lower concentration which is the near-vacuum of space.
