Photosynthesis is one of the most important processes occurring on the surface of the earth. It enables the transformation of light energy into oxygen and carbohydrates as food for plants. It uses carbon dioxide. Another parallel process that utilizes oxygen also occurs in plants and is called photorespiration. It produces a product, which is further processed to release carbon dioxide.
