Concept explainers
You and a friend weigh your loaded backpack every day for a week. The results are shown in the table. Find the mean, median, mode, and range of the weights of your backpack and your friend’s backpack. Use your results to compare the backpack weights.
Find the mean , median , mode , and range of the weights of your backpack and your friend’s backpack.
Answer to Problem 27P
Your backpack’s weight :
Mean = 12.2
Median = 12.2
Mode = no mode
Range = 3
Friend’s backpack’s weight:
Mean=12.5
Median=12.6
Mode= no mode
Range= 1.4
Comparison :
- Mean of your friend is more than that of yours.
- Median of your friend is more than that of yours.
- Both you and your friend have no mode.
- Range of you is more than that of your friend’s.
Explanation of Solution
Given:
You and a friend weigh your loaded backpack every day for a week. The results are shown in the table.
Calculation:
Arrange the given data of your backpack’s weight in ascending order :
10.5 , 11.6 , 12.2 , 13.2 , 13.5
Mean =
Median = The median is the middle value ( since there are 5 entries , which is odd)
Mode = The entry that appeares maximum number of times = since all the data values occur only once , so , there is no mode.
Range is the difference of the highest and lowest value of the data = 13.5 − 10.5 =3
Arrange the given data of weight of your friend’s backpack in ascending order :
11.6 , 12.5 , 12.6 , 12.8 , 13
Mean =
Median = The median is the middle value ( since there are 5 entries , which is odd)
Mode = The entry that appeares maximum number of times = since all the data values occur only once , so , there is no mode.
Range is the difference of the highest and lowest value of the data = 13-11.6 = 1.4
Comparison :
- Mean of your friend is more than that of yours.
- Median of your friend is more than that of yours.
- Both you and your friend have no mode.
- Range of you is more than that of your friend’s.
