Interpretation:
The fundamental difference between the given processes by which gases are formed during the boiling of water and the burning of gasoline is to be explained.
Concept Introduction:
Covalent bonds are formed by the sharing of electrons between the two electronegative atoms and can be classified as polar or nonpolar on the basis of the atoms involved in them. The overall polarity of a molecule is dependent on the structure of the molecule. If the dipoles cancel each other, then the molecule is nonpolar.
Molecules that contain a hydrogen atom bonded to an electronegative element can undergo hydrogen bond formation. A hydrogen bond is formed between a hydrogen atom and an atom of nitrogen, oxygen or fluorine etc.
Certain fuels, such as, gasoline or diesel, which are a mixture of hydrocarbons, vaporize when burned, but immediately get oxidized to form carbon dioxide and water vapor.

- 2. Why does the temperature of a mixture of ice and water remain constant during melting and freezing?arrow_forward38. A public water supply was found to contain 1 part per billion (ppb) by mass chloroform, CHCl3. How many CHCl3 molecules would be present in 12 fl oz of this water?arrow_forwardYou grab a soft drink bottle from your refrigerator. The contents are liquid and remain liquid even when shaken. You now remove the cover, and the liquid solidifies. Provide an explanation for this finding.arrow_forward
- Which of these properties of water is one which makes it such a good solvent? its boiling point its high specific heat its high surface tension its hydrogen bonding abilityarrow_forwardWhich will have a higher boiling temperature, a mixture containing more water or a mixture containing more acetic acidarrow_forwardCobalt (II) chloride hexahydrate, CoCl2 · 6H2O, is often used as a humidity indicator. This is due to the fact that the hydrate is a deep magenta color while the anhydrous form is a pale blue. As the humidity level changes, the color changes as well. What is the mass percent water in cobalt (II) hexahydrate ?arrow_forward
- Which is NOT a property of water? It is a common observation that when sun comes out immediately after a rain shower, the puddles formed from the rain dries up faster than if it remains cloudy. Explain, on the molecular level, why this occurs.arrow_forwardDilution means adding water to something so that the ratio of solute to solvent is less than in the original solution. Some people say, “Dilution is the solution to pollution.” Do you think this statement true? Could you ever add enough water so that there would be no drink mix—that the water would be the same as in cup #6, pure water? Do you think you could you ever add enough water to a pollutant to make it disappear completely? Why or why not?arrow_forward
