Interpretation: Orbital diagram for excited atom of boron needs to be determined.
Concept interpretation: The ground state describes the lowest possible energy that an atom can have and excited States refers to the level when an atom absorbs energy from external sources to go to the higher energy state.
Answer to Problem 11STP
Explanation of Solution
Boron is the fifth element with a 5 electrons. since Boron has two electron in its 1s orbit, two electrons in 2S orbit and 1 electron in 2P orbital in its ground state while in excited state the 1 electron from 2s orbital jumps to 2P orbital making it excited state of boron.
When an atom absorbs energy from external sources to go to the higher energy state to form bonding with other atoms then an electron from lower orbit jumps to higher orbit and that state is known as excited state.
