Concept explainers
Interpretation:
A technological application of chemistry should be named along with its discovery and development that one uses every day.
Concept introduction:
The branch of science which study about elements and compounds made up of atoms, ions and molecules is said to be chemistry. The study involves composition, properties, formation, structure and reactions shown by a substance.
Explanation of Solution
One of the most common energy storage devices is lead storage battery, invented by French physicist Gaston Planté in 1859 and it is still used in many applications. It is the earliest type of rechargeable battery that makes it important for their use in cars. The first model by Planté contained two sheets of lead that are separated from each other by rubber strips and immersed in a solution that contains 10 % sulfuric acid. It has a positive electrode of lead dioxide and negative electrode of active material, lead. This lead-acid battery could be recharged by passing reverse current. With time, several developments have taken place which succeeded with the prototype of a storage battery.
After 1970, enclosed valve regulated lead storage batteries were developed and were used in a variety of devices like motorcycles.
