Question
Chapter 1, Problem 52A
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
The depletion of ozone layer by CFCs needs to be described.
Concept introduction:
CFCs means chlorofluorocarbons that are partly or fully halogenated paraffin hydrocarbons containing carbon, chlorine, fluorine and hydrogen in their structure.
Expert Solution & Answer
Explanation of Solution
The CFCs are harmful as:
- It destroys the Earth’s ozone layer, that helps in shielding the earth from UV-B (ultraviolet) rays generated from sun, this biologically damaging radiation possessing high-energy causes injury in eyes, skin cancer etc.
- It also changes the global climate of Earth by warming the lower atmosphere of the earth.
Thus, increase use of CFCs will increase the depletion of life on Earth as it results in decrease in ozone layer.
